Line-Dot.Shape for Catchpenny ensemble
The inspiration for my works many times comes from an object - its physical shape, its use, the different sounds it can produce. This piece is inspired by two objects - the telegraph and a light panel.
I've used the telegraph as an instrument in the piece, and it is played by the percussionist.
With the light panels I've been working for sometime, mainly as a light pad. For this specific piece I have developed a new technique which I named - light collages. The collages are made of printed photos which are placed on the light panel and create interesting shapes. The printed images that I've used for the collages are the images of the light panel itself.
The video for the piece consists of images of those light collages. For me, the video is an interesting medium to exhibit those collages. But the main use of the video is a visual score for the musicians. The musicians are following the video score and sonify it by following guidelines which are inspired by the principle of Morse code. I've chosen this system because I find it interesting and inspiring, and of course it brings us back to the idea of the telegraph.
This piece is following a long line of my works which are inspired by an object and based on a visual score. For me, using and developing those ideas are an ongoing process, which I believe represent a big part of my identity as an artist.
This piece was composed for Catchpenny ensemble for the program Light Trace in Het Orgelpark, Amsterdam 2021
